Writers Island - DESIRE

How often have you made that phone call early in the morning without thinking about the time of day or whether you'd be disturbing the person you were calling?

Since retiring early morning calls happen more frequently and unfortunately my response is less than gracious. Do people get up earlier as they become older or have they been that way all their lives? Why do people say that the morning is the best time of the day?

Well ... not for all of us!

During my working life I was often getting home as dairy farmers were rising. Three plus decades in the hospitality industry made me a night owl.

We were the people who organised your social life. We were the people who watched you party till wee small hours. When the customers were swept out, the tills counted and the ash trays washed it was time to sit back, unwind. The time flew, next thing the sun was peeking over the horizon. We were the ones who'd go home to get the family organised then sleep during the day, sometimes we'd go out for breakfast as our previous night customers had done for dinner.

There was a whole lifestye out there of people who'd kept the city running. The the cops, the firemen, the journo's, medico's, nurses, ambulance drivers, cleaners, people from all walks of life it was our 5pm. As the five o'clockers had no immediate desire to head straight home for a good night sleep, neither did we!!

The night owl lifestyle reversed many body clocks. Even in retirement the hours of that era continue. The 'spark' or 'second wind' hits as the clock nears midnight - its difficult to alter.

I found the following online ... author unknown ...

A Morning Person ...

I woke early one morning

The earth lay cool and still
When suddenly a tiny bird
Perched on my window sill

He sang a song so lovely
So carefree and so gay

That slowly all my troubles
Began to slip away.

He sang of far off places
of laughter and fun,

It seemed his very trilling,
brought up the morning sun.

I stirred beneath the covers
crept slowly out of bed,

Then I gently lowered the window
and crushed his *(#$^ - ing head!!!

… please, no irate responses from the bird lovers.

This little ditty typifies it for many night owls and insomniacs.

So next time you meet someone new and swap phone numbers why not ask “When's the best time to call”?

Better go check the answering machine's on in case anyone dares phone before 10am ...

LOVED the poem! and, i'm with you, i'm not a morning person although i've never worked odd hours. they say the older you get, the earlier you rise? lies. i rise about an hour or two later on the weekends, NEVER at the time i'm supposed to wake up for work or earlier. NEVER!

trust me....no phone calls from me!

I'm up early and sleep late. Most of the people I tend to socialize with don't sleep either, so I'm not bothering them.

When I am sleeping, though, I'll kill you, if you bother me. Probably because I don't sleep often.

I actually hate using the phone. I think I've given my cell number to 2 people besides family, and I told them not to call me unless it was an emergency.

I used to be allergic to birds.

I don't know, if I still am.

This made me love the poem!

I am a morning person. I get up around 5 am. And end my day a just a little after midnight.

I too have an aversion for phones. I even conveniently forget to carry my cell phone.

You post made me think..

That poem's a hoot! I nearly choked on my sandwich! If any bird dared chirp on my sill before 9.30 it wouldn't see 10! And early phone calls - I flip! Reader beware.

Funny post, poor bird...

Late night or early morning calls get my heart racing. I immediately assume someone has died, even though I'm pretty sure who's calling (always the same people,) and that it's for my wife.

LOVE the poem! I too am a real night owl, though forced to get up early these days. My kids have inherited it too. I often say that my daughter sleeps just fine - for someone who lives in England! Two bad she's in Israel which is two hours later...

I'm caught between two stools here. I've been a newsagent and in the forces, so know early mornings. But I've also spent time in hospitality and in a band.
Guess I'm an insomniac.

Lovely poem you shared. I am not a morning person either. In the past I was one of the late customers. Always had a difficulty to end something good. After we went out we sometimes got together somewhere for baked eggs and talked till early in the morning. That's the only times I saw the baker in our village baking the warm buns which he willingly sold to us at the backdoor.

I dislike phone calls that awaken me no matter what time it is. That's one funny bird poem and he certainly earned his reward. Nice post, enjoyed the read - I was always a night person. Headed home about the time others were off to work. Now my hours are just confusing!
