What a great start to a Monday ... the news that I'm the winner over at Emjie's ... Yayyyyyyyyy!
I noticed Emjie's running Archive Friday ...
... Emjie's writes of a friends father's reaction to a poem she'd written. I instantly recalled the time in 1997 when I told my dad I was going to do a University degree ...
"You won't finish it" was his retort!
The cruelty of his words were nothing new. Like Emjie I was gutted ...
... but ...
... I graduated ...
... dad never took those words back ...
... I felt nothing when I'd hear him announce "Dorter has a university degree" ...
If dad knew of my upcoming venture no doubt his reaction would be identical ...
... watch this space !

Hey! Thanks for the props.
Wow, that must have been tough to hear your own parent say that. Good on you for persevering and proving your worth to yourself. And bugger the others if they still can't.
When you have a moment email to me your postal address so I can send you the zine. My email address is emjieart@y7mail.com
It's so hard to hear that stuff from your parents. My parents once told my sisters and I that we should enjoy the lifestyle they've provided for us because we'd likely never reach it on our own. I guess they had no hopes that we'd be successful. Another time my dad and I got in a fight. He said I was never successful at anything unless he intervened and "pulled strings". He would so often try to intervene because it was hard for him to imagine we'd could succeed without his help.
All that kind of stuff can be really damaging for self-esteem.
I'm glad you showed yourself (and your dad) that you could finish school with our without his emotional support.
My dad fortunately DID take some of his words back. Or at least he apologized. I give him credit for that.
