Shoulda beans or has beans ...

Today in the local supermarket I went to buy fresh green beans and saw there was an old fellow hunched over, in front of the beans picking them out of the box, touching them and breaking them in half.

I waited a for a second, he saw me watching him as he went to walk away I asked "Did you wash your hands before you touched those beans?" The look on his face was priceless, yet indignantly he started at me in the thickest Euopean accent ... "You are mad, vhat are you talking about, you voman you are mad ... "

Two boys working in the department jumped to my defence telling him to "Rack off mate!"

Ahhhhhhhhhh the joys of shopping at Christmas !

Ears & Eyes at 92 ...

My Dad was in fine form today ... he told me ...

Writers Island ~ This Season

In December in Australia the temperature often rises to thirty degrees celsius yet many domestic goddess’s still prepare a hot Christmas lunch in the name of ‘tradition.’ Turkey, ham, roast vegetables, sweet green peas with lashings of rich gravy “because that’s what her mother did”, are served as scrumptious Christmas fare. Nowadays more and more Aussies opt for cool, fresh seafood. Despite costing an arm and a leg many a good woman’s sanity is saved. Even more people choose to "go out" for lunch, to restaurants, on cruises, in hotels where people pay through the nose to avoid the drudgery while in reality they're paying the double time wages of the staff … is that why staff are so welcoming?

As a kid Christmas lunch was a stuffed roast chicken, roast potato, roast sweet potato, roast pumpkin and green peas or beans. Chicken was a luxury. Dad was the "bread winner"entitling him to be served the white meat while the kids got the “dark meat.” In those days chickens weren’t pumped full of chemicals to keep the meat of the entire bird whiter than white. The breast meat was white, the drumsticks, wings and the rest of the bird was a darker colour … real chicken fed real food. There was no lavish, over the top, razzamataz that goes on today. The kids all played on the street, showing off their ‘new’ bikes, prams, scooters and toys, busting to be first one up and out while still in pyjamas – kids were safe on the street.

People were of limited means, credit cards didn’t exist. If you couldn’t afford it or parents couldn’t make it, conjure it up or Mum lay-by it, you didn’t get it. For weeks prior, Dad worked on secret projects down in the shed, his inner sanctum, where we had to knock before entering. I realised in later years Dad must have been painting that bike pink, refurbishing that dolls house, or renovating a found object. Late at night we’d hear Mum pedalling away on the Singer treadle sewing machine, where, if we happened to venture out on the pretext of a glass of water or a bad dream, covers would be thrown over stuff, lights would be hastily switched off depriving us of a glimpse of what was going on!

The first memory of this season is around three to four years old, that's me ready to go and see Santa standing in front of the armoire begging Mum to not wear "my irons" ... I wore callipers as a kid ...

Another childhood memory of this season, a couple of years later was creeping, out late at night, probably unable to sleep with anticipation, and seeing Dad hurl a blanket over two small rattan chairs – I always thought Santa had already been and Dad must have spoken to him, that one baffled me for years.

The memories are flooding back – there’s a host of Christmas’ to remember and to forget, see you same time next year for more memories of this season!

TELSTRA Scam - rounding off cents on bills ...

I have noticed (and on back-checking have confirmed) that Telstra adds 1c rounding to a number of their accounts (not all). A bill today for $120.42 cents to which they rounde 1c making the bill $120.43 - that way they could be receiving 120.45 instead of 120.40. If you multiply that by the number of people in Australia who have a paid for Telstra service it could certainly add a few million dollars a year in Telstra coffers.

Isn't that cheating???

On a previous bill they added 1 cent to a bill that added up to $89.76, making it $89.77 and therefore raising the bill to $89.80.

I phoned to query! Telstra apologised profusely and gave me a credit of $1.00 for any past additions! Makes you think they are aware of the cheating, working on the principle of 'who notices a cent?"

Please check your bills ... phone them and complain - get your dollar rebate and let them know that you know Telstra is cheating!

The gorgeous B.F. has blown the lid on this Telstra scam!!

Writers Island .. "The Moment."

Yikes ... put's it mildly when discovering the prompt ...

The next prompt here on the island will be… “The Moment”.
Maybe its the one to remember, or the one you wish you could forget, or the one your currently living in, or the one that changed your life, or the one you’ve always dreamed of, or the one you’ve always feared — perhaps it is the one of your most profound realization… what ever the moment you choose, please share it with us...

WHICH MOMENT ... ? How can a single moment be "THE MOMENT" ?

How about the sad childhood ... that one ???

Or the even sadder teens ... that moment ???

How about the moment when mother caught me wagging school and had my long hair cut into a boyish style ... that one???

How about the joyous moments of giving birth, the euphoria, the elation, the never before felt rapture ... that one???

The falling in and out of love ... ???

All the special occassions relating to my girls "firsts" ... first smile, first step, first drawing, first day at school, first time they said "I love you Mummy" ... those ones ???

The moment when I took a long hard look at myself ... that one ???

Or when someone beloved died ... that one ... ???

The moment of being first published ... that one ???

See ... there's tooooooooo many moments!!!

None of my singular moments will fit onto a small page or deserve to be compartmentalised. The moments relevant to this life all count.

Whether happy, inherited, hassels, horrid, human, hysterical, humiliating, hazy, hard, haphazard ... they're all part of the big picture, the humongous amount of moments ... that make yours truly ... precisely the same as this very moment!!

Sunday Scribblings # 88 Competition

A game of Trivial Pursuit or Canasta is the best and only competition for me now!

Isn’t competition supposed to mean to strive, to achieve, to seek rivalry - don’t you think people have got that out of perspective? Isn’t competition difference, shouldn’t healthy competition go hand in hand with mutual respect?

Nothing irks me to the core, more, than when a story is being told and you can hear the so called listener, drawing breath, busting at the seams, revving up, ready to one up your story and blurt out, what they consider a similar or better story to the one you’re telling … communication isn’t a competition … don’t you want to scream “IT’S NOT A COMPETITION!!”

Like when you’re expecting a comment, relevant to what you’ve said or written and you receive a diatribe that’s only relevant to the other person! The people who dismiss your thoughts or contribution as they make it all about them as if your opinion is only a stepping stone to bore you with what’s going on in their own head … that’s infuriating, detestable competition.

Entering a competition, feeling sure that your entry is the winning one – no-one ever tells you not to lose heart if you don’t win. No one tells you competition is about difference. The opinion of the person judging or marking more than likely will never be the same as your’s … do these people ever realise how they frequently hurt people, deeply, because of their “qualified” judgement …

Best competitions are surely the competition of two sporting teams, especially if it’s 'your' team, the one you adore ... the exhilaration if your team wins …

The competition of your kids and grandkids vying for your attention is superb…

Of your dogs running towards you with their tails wagging off their backsides is the best or fluffy cats purring and pushing each other out of the way to get to your ankles is adorable competition ...

... but the very best of all is when you're feeling good inside after you've accomplished, beaten the odds, when the only person you had to compete against was the most important person you know ...YOU!

Wikipedia says ~~~
Competition is the rivalry of two or more parties over something. Competition occurs naturally between living organisms which coexist in an environment with limited resources. For example, animals compete over water supplies, food, and mates. In addition, humans compete for attention, wealth, prestige, and fame.

… who are those people who said competition is healthy … bah humbug???

Think before you judge people ...

The following certainly is food for thought ...

2 questions ...

Question 1.
If you knew a woman who was pregnant and had 8 kids already - three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded - and she had Syphillis, would you recommendthat she have an abortion?

Read the next question before looking at the response for this one.

Question 2.
It is time to elect a new world leader, and only YOUR vote counts. Here are facts about the three candidates:

Candidate A. Associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologists. He's had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.

Candidate B. He was kicked out of office twice, sleeps until noon, used opium in college and drinks a quart of whiskey every evening.

Candidate C. He is a decorated war hero. He's a vegetarian, doesn't smoke, drinks an occasionalbeer and never cheated on his wife.

Which of these candidates would be your choice?

Decide first, no peeking ...

Candidate A. is Franklin D. Roosevelt
Candidate B. is Winston Churchill
Candidate C. is Adolf Hitler

On your answer to the abortion question: If you said YES, you just killed Beethoven.

Pretty interesting isn't it?

Should make a person think before judging another.

Remember:
Amateurs built the Ark. Professionals built the Titanic.

Writers Island - "The Promise" ...

'The Promise' topic has exasperated me. I've pondered, remembered, revisted and relived a zillion memorable moments and you know what ...? I can think of a multitude of promises I made, a plethora I kept and a couple I broke ...
BUT ...
yikes ...
When I recall all the naffs that have broken promises to me ... subject closed!!!

PARSLEY in PYRMONT.

Parsley is my most favourite herb. Sprinkle it over eggs, deep fry it, add to to salads, stir fry's or munch the tops of it when you see it in a window box ...

So green, so lush, so inviting, supposedly an aphrodisiac, the perfect cure for garlic breath, so imagine my delight ...
Sydney City Council have parsley growing, thriving, in planter boxes on the footpath / sidewalk of Harris Street Pyrmont, an inner city suburb of Sydney ... there's enough for everyone ...

NSW Police Band ... crime shirkers ...

A pic from an episode of Blue Heelers or an Australian IDOL audition you ask ???

NOooooo ... it's too many police officers shirking the beat whilst under the guise of The NSW Police Band performing at a Sydney suburban street fair today.

No wonder we wait so long for police to answer a call ... too many are at band practice. What a rort. ... join the cops to fight crime, end up in a rock 'n'roll band, receive a cops wage ... how good is that !!!!

What an outrageous use of resources ... police salaries, instruments, chairs, music stands, sound equipment, sound engineers, huge trucks to carry the equipment, buses to transport the 'band' ... and the band plays on while crime and fear rages ...????????

Poetry or Stream of Consciousness???

Missing blogging

Sunday Scribblings # 87 WALK

A stroll along the promenade at Bondi Beach was THE place for young ladies to be seen on a warm Sunday afternoon in 1938.

Mum with her friend Coralie Martin, two fashionable 17 year olds in uncomplicated times.

A walk, a stroll, an amble on the prom was a pleasure, entertainment ... look at what we don't appreciate anymore, the simple joys of life, gone!

... wasn't that worth waiting for ???

A weight has been lifted ...

Thanks to Whiskeykitten for ...

A mental barrier was broken, a block removed, a hurdle overcome. I am so proud of myself, for reasons difficult to explain to the outsider. Unless someone knows what I have been through, what I have dealt with, this little barrier would seem insignificant and you’d probably say “so what?”
But for me, it’s a Big Thing, and I feel like this huge weight has been lifted from my shoulders. A new spring in my step. A deeper breath and a bigger smile.
Yay Me!!

I need a lemon to take the smile off my face ... with faith in the justice system restored ...

Sunday Scribblings #86 - "Misspent Youth"

Sunday Scribblings #86 "Misspent Youth" -
Did you "mis-spend" your youth? What kind of kid were you? Worrisome to your folks? Mature beyond your years? Wild? Shy? How did you spend you time? Out of curiosity, how many of you knew "what you wanted to be when you grew up" and accomplished it? How many times did you change your mind? Do you think your kid self would approve of you now?

I’ll do as asked and answer the prompt questions ...

Yes probably my youth was ‘misspent’ as was so many in the 50s, especially compared to today! No vocational guidance, limited life opportunities. Girls weren't encouraged to continue on to tertiary studies, why bother, why waste the money when all they would do was meet a boy, get married and have babies, was the parental attitude. The school curriculum choice’s for girls was ‘Domestic Science’ preparation for marriage, wifely duties and motherhood or “Shorthand and Typing", three years of high school to work in an office. We left school at fifteen, went to work and waited to be old enough ...

Only girls from wealthy families or the few who won a scholarship went to University. The rest of us had the choices of nurse, hairdresser, shop assistant, work in a bank or hope that a date on Saturday night would eventually lead to a ring on your finger, a white dress, a picket fence and babies.

We worked in boring jobs and husband hunted. We farewelled one of us, gasping in awe at her fashionable Kangaroo skin coat as she boarded a Qantas flight to London to pursue a modelling career as we, by this time, were pushing prams and watching "Days of out Lives."

I was worrisome to my folks from day one – unwanted, unplanned and not a boy! Tradition deemed a boy should be the first child to “carry on the family name."

I
was a quiet, unhappy, ugly kid that never did anything right.

I spent my time avoiding or recovering from “the whacking stick”.

I had no idea of what I wanted to be when I grew up, my future was to do as I was told and "be seen and not heard."

My mind was changed a zillion times depending on who was in charge.

My kid self would approve and love me now. I vaguely recall sitting at the kitchen tables of other kids mother's or women neighbour's, especially at those where I was forbidden, forever seeking love and safety … those women taught me well.

It's a great day in Australia, John Howard defeated -

It's a great day in Australia today with the defeat of Australian Prime Minister in his parliamentary seat of Bennelong by ex ABC news front woman Maxine McKew eliminating him as leader of the nation!

A brilliant result, Australian's have finally shirked apathy, by voting the little turd out to pasture - it's wonderful to know that people power has toppled George "Dubya" Bush's best mate.

Let's hope the American people have the guts to do the same thing ... it's easy!

Happy Thanksgiving ...

The fourth Thursday of November is the day people in the United States and Americans all over the world traditionally celebrate Thanksgiving.
What does it all mean I wondered so Wikipedia provided an informative description of what Thanksgiving meant ... here.

As a dedicated Martha fan I've salivated through November as she's prepared lavish feasts, brined a turkey and shown how to prepare other sumptuous treats ... now I understand why!

Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating - save me a wing please!

Writers Island "The Dream"

Begrudgingly I delve into the memory bank! Long past feelings and memories dredge up … I’ll appease unwanted surging memoirs with … well, isn’t that what writing’s for?

Dream is not in my vocabulary, neither during the day or night. Recollections of dealing with the angsting, pacing, fear and dread through endless sleepless nights while waiting for the fear of sleep to abate and pleading within for the soaring, the flying, the yearnings to land and the flight to end are no more.

Angry exhausted mornings are no more.

Seeking sleep with a clear mind where prescribed benzos are no longer the lull-a-bye are no more.

Now light reading, meditation and internal peace makes the ultimate end to each day. If the dream is sweet for you, be grateful!

Christmas Wish List Ideas ...

Started the Christmas wish list today ... wonder if the girls would like one of these?

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaa ... found it here ... she's gone to lie down - no wonder!
